Outdoor Shoe Maintenance
Well-maintained shoes last longer and retain their technical properties (waterproofing, support, grip).
🧹 Cleaning
- Remove insoles and laces before cleaning.
- Brush the sole and upper with a soft brush and lukewarm water.
- For leather: use a special leather soap. For textiles: water and a soft brush are sufficient.
- Never machine wash or use harsh detergents.
💧 Waterproofing
- Apply a waterproofing spray or wax to clean, slightly damp shoes.
- For leather: use a nourishing wax (Sno-Seal, Nikwax Leather Wax) to nourish and protect.
- Repeat after each outing in wet conditions.
🌬️ Drying
- Dry at room temperature, never near a direct heat source (radiator, fire) which can deform the sole and weaken adhesives.
- Stuff the inside with newspaper to absorb moisture and maintain shape.
- Remove insoles to speed up drying.
📦 Storage
- Store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated place, away from direct light.
- Use shoe trees to maintain shape over the long term.
- Never store in a sealed plastic bag (condensation).
🔧 Common Repairs
- Delaminating sole: use a special neoprene shoe glue (Barge, Sno-Seal).
- Worn laces: replace them at the first sign of fraying.
- Worn insole: replace with a comfort or orthopedic insole.
⏳ Lifespan and Signs of Wear
- Smooth outsole = reduced grip, replacement necessary.
- Upper deforming or delaminating = end of shoe life.
- Average lifespan: 500 to 1,000 km depending on terrain and maintenance.
