Buying guide — Choosing your hiking shoes

How to choose your hiking shoes?

Shoes are a hiker's most important piece of equipment. A bad choice can cause blisters, sprains, and pain.

📍 1. Ankle height

Type Support Use
Low-cut Low Easy trails, light trail running
Mid-cut Medium Classic hiking, varied terrain
High-cut High Rough terrain, heavy load

🌍 2. Type of terrain

  • Marked trails: light shoe, flexible sole.
  • Mixed terrain: multi-terrain sole with moderate lugs.
  • Technical / rocky terrain: rigid sole, deep lugs, high ankle.
  • Snow / mud: maximum waterproofing, deep lugs.

💧 3. Waterproofing

  • Waterproof membrane (Gore-Tex): dry feet in wet weather. Less breathable in heat.
  • No membrane: more breathable, dries faster. Ideal in dry and hot weather.

🦶 4. Size and foot shape

  • Take half a size larger than your usual size (feet swell with effort).
  • Check the width: some brands offer wide models.
  • Try them on with your usual hiking socks.

💰 5. Budget

  • Under 80€: beginner, occasional outings.
  • 80 – 180€: regular hiker, good value for money.
  • 180€+: intensive use, premium materials, long lifespan.
