Fishing Gear Maintenance

Well-maintained fishing gear is more reliable and lasts much longer.

🧹 Cleaning

  • Rods: Rinse with fresh water after each use, especially in saltwater. Dry before storing.
  • Reels: Rinse with fresh water, wipe with a soft cloth. Never immerse in water.
  • Lures: Rinse and dry before storing to prevent hook corrosion.

🔧 Regular Maintenance

  • Reel: Lubricate gears and rotor with special reel grease once a season. Check the drag and adjust if necessary.
  • Line (braid or fluorocarbon): Regularly inspect for knots, abrasions, or weaknesses. Replace at the beginning of the season.
  • Hooks: Check the point with your finger. A dull hook = fewer bites, replace it.
  • Rod guides: Inspect for scratches that wear down the line.

📦 Storage

  • Store rods in their cases or on a rod rack, protected from impacts.
  • Loosen the reel's drag for long-term storage.
  • Store lures in waterproof boxes, categorized by type.
  • Store in a dry place, away from heat and direct light.

⏳ Lifespan and Signs of Wear

  • Squeaking reel or erratic drag = maintenance or replacement needed.
  • Rod with scratched guide = replace the guide before it wears down the line.
  • Line that frequently breaks = immediate replacement.
  • Average lifespan: 5 to 15 years for a rod, 3 to 10 years for a reel.
