Backpack Maintenance
A well-maintained backpack retains its technical properties and can last for many years.
🧹 Cleaning
- Empty the bag completely and turn all pockets inside out.
- Hand wash with lukewarm water and mild soap, focusing on contact areas (shoulder straps, hip belt).
- Rinse thoroughly to remove all soap residue.
- Do not machine wash or use fabric softener (clogs the water-repellent treatment).
💧 Water-repellent treatment
- Apply a waterproofing spray after each cleaning on clean, dry fabric.
- Allow to dry completely before use.
🌬️ Drying
- Air dry, open and inside out, away from direct sunlight.
- Never tumble dry or dry near a heat source.
📦 Storage
- Store empty, clean, and dry in a ventilated area.
- Avoid closed plastic bags (condensation and mold).
- Store uncompressed, without crushing the shoulder straps or hip belt.
🔧 Common repairs
- Stuck zipper: lubricate with beeswax or a graphite pencil.
- Loose seam: repair with strong thread or a self-adhesive patch.
- Broken buckle: replace with a buckle of the same size available at haberdasheries.
- Leaking hydration pocket: check the cap seal and replace if necessary.
⏳ Lifespan and signs of wear
- Shoulder straps or hip belt losing their foam = reduced comfort, replacement recommended.
- Fabric that tears easily = end of the bag's life.
- Average lifespan: 5 to 15 years depending on frequency of use and maintenance.
